In Which I Discover The Amazing Collapsing Bed

It is currently very early in the morning. 1:50 in the morning to be exact, and really I should be asleep. Well, actually I was asleep until about fifteen minutes ago, when I rolled over and my bed fell apart.

Perhaps I should say Jeremy's bed fell apart; I've slept in his home hospital bed the last couple of nights because I don't have a bed set up yet in our bedroom. The storage unit that we'll use to get our old, huge and currently dismantled bed out of the room doesn't open until Tuesday, and there's no space to put another small bed in there until the old one is gone. Anyway, apparently the guy who delivered and put the bed together for us failed to seat the bolts on the side of the headboard closest to the wall. It seemed pretty sturdy and I didn't think to check his handiwork.

So let's return to the me of fifteen minutes ago, blissfully asleep (the bed's got a memory foam mattress-- pretty cushy) until I swam up out of a dream a little thirsty and decided to get a drink. I grabbed the trapeze that hangs over the bed with one hand and used it to sit up-- or at least that was the plan. What actually happened was that my weight on the trapeze caused the headboard at the corner to detach, and I was very abruptly left dangling from the trapeze by one arm as the entire left hand side of the bed plummeted away beneath me. I am now blogging while I wait for the enormous adrenaline rush to wear off. It may be a while.

So Jeremy's hospital bed is now partially dismantled on our floor until somebody can come repair it on Tuesday-- I've tried seating the bolts myself and there's no way I have the muscle strength to do it. Thank goodness the bed collapse happened to me and not to him! At any rate, I'll be sleeping on the futon for the next couple of nights, and I will now add "bed collapsing underneath me" to my growing list of things to be paranoid about.

Yeesh.

Oh.my.goodness!

I don't even want to think about what could've happened!

I'm imagining you are blissfully asleep right now (until Connor wakes you, I suspect).

I'm so sorry (but you're right, it's better that it happened to you and not Jeremy).
I have had a bed collapse beneath me and agree with you 100% that it's terrifying. In my case, it was a crappy frame that I hadn't put together properly, not a hospital bed.
As for the spa trip, you SOOOOO deserve it!

Oh my word! That must've been, um, a bit unnerving! Glad it happened now instead of with Jer. Whew.

Perhpas that was the universe's way of reaffirming that, yes, you DO absolutely deserve and need that spa package! Enjoy.

You're kidding me. That's something that Just Shouldn't Happen, not when there is presumably a very sick and/or injured person sleeping in it. I'm guessing you'll point this out to whomever put it together the first time or the appropriate representative of said party. I'm so glad about the spa package and the chance to get away for a little bit. You need to take care of yourself.

Oh my word! That is the craziest thing I have ever heard! Thank God you tried the bed out before Jeremy got home. It must have been terrifying for you, but it could have been disastrous for him!

You would think that putting together a hospital bed would be pretty serious business and the person would check and double check everything to make sure it is sturdy, but I guess that is just my crazy assumption!

By the way, enjoy the spa day and shopping - sounds like a real treat especially after this happening.

I feel your pain. My bed is still whole, but two nights ago I woke up to tickling on my arm and there was a HUGE big FAT spider crawling on my ARM!!! Gah. Try sleeping after that! I imagine the whole bed collapsing thing was just as hard to fall asleep after.

Getting caught up!

1. Sorry to hear that Jer's left ankle is so messed up. Glad to hear about the right one though.

2. I suspect any and all orthopedic surgeries are tough and painful

3. Thank goodness you are OK after sleeping in a collapsing bed and thank the Lord that Jeremy wasn't in there when it happened--how would you have ever gotten him off the ground?

4. Excited about the spa day--if anyone deserves one, you do.

Thank goodness you "test drove" the hospital bed before Jeremy needed it! A hospital bed collapsing is just plain wrong- how fast can someone get out to repair it?
